Leesburg vs Sanford, High School Football Game

Sanford Too Much For Valiant Leesburg Friday: 25 to 0

Celery Fed Hawkins A Whole Ball Team All By Himself

By Sports Staff
Leesburg Commercial-Ledger
Sunday October 3, 1954

On the first play from that spot, Hawkins snared a pass and crossed the line with three or four Yellow
Jackets hanging onto him. Try for point was no good. Score: Sanford 18, Leesburg 0.

In the fourth quarter another fumble stared more trouble. Grisgsby and Collins combined to make yard
of
Leesburg and had the ball on the Sanford 43. A short gain was equalized by a 5-yard penalty against
the
Yellow Jackets and it was 2nd and 10. On a hand-off Grigsby to Collins, a fumble was recovered by
Sanford on the mid-stripe.

Hawkins carried for 5. Flowers made the yards and it was Sanford 1st down on Leesburg's 39 yard line.
Two  15-yard penalties found Sanford still in possession with 25 yards to go on 3rd down. A pass from
Sanford 40 gave Hawkins a chance to make it to the Leesburg 7-yard line. Next play it was over for the
TD. The extra point was made by a good pass into the end zone. Score: Sanford 25, Leesburg 0.

Sanford was touted as a strong aggregation and they are. And Friday night they were the better team of
the two. No doubt of that. To make the situation worse, Yellow Jacket ground gainers just couldn't get
away
