Improving Osceola Is Jackets’ Foe Friday

The First Big Test has come and gone, and Leesburg High’s Yellow Jackets carry an A average into
the next one not as big, maybe, but tough.

Osceola High of Kissimmee comes to Memorial Field Friday night at 8 p.m. to test the Jackets with an
attack balanced well between running and passing, and a defense which has tightened up since an
opening game loss to Haines City, 12-0.

Osceola beat Winter Garden Lakeview last week, 30-6, behind the running of brother tailback
combination, Wally and “Batman” Brown. Wally Brown rushed for 97 yards, setting a new school
record, and scored three touchdowns.

Quarterback Warren Lewis heads the passing attack, which rolled up 160 yards against Lakeview.

Inexperience hurt the Cowboys against Haines City. Only seven lettermen returned from last years
squad. Haines City held them to 70 yards on the ground while profiting from defensive mistakes. But
the defense tightened up against Lakeview. Freddy Williams heads the defenders.

The Yellow Jackets’ passing attack – expected to be the point of Leesburg’s spear – has been limited
by double coverage given to receivers Greg Williams and Sherrill Lackey. Quarterback Mike Napier was
held to just 15 passes against St. Augustine with Andy Carlton adding four and last week completed
eight of 22. Williams has broken loose to catch three TD passes, and Lackey has received two.

But the tight coverage given the pass receivers, and the ever-present threat of a big pass play, has
allowed the Jackets running game to break free. Fullback Sam Rixie slotback Tony Hart, Mike Chatman
and Napier rolled up 317 yards on the ground against St. Augustine, and in a tight defensive game
against DeLand, added 137, mostly on Rixie’s running through the middle.

Strongest part of the Jackets’ game, however, has been the defense. It’s allowed only three points all
year while limiting St. Augustine to 121 yards total and DeLand to 125. Greg Johnson, Jim Mackey,
Lynn Gilbert, Mark Sneed, Hovie Guthrie, Chatman, Jerome Holman, David Osborne, Williams, Napier
– well, list the Jackets roster – have been standouts.
