300 Football Players Out For Spring Drills

More than 300 high school football players have started spring practice at Lake County's seven public
schools.

Spring drills began on Wednesday and, according to Florida High School Activities Association rules,
can continue for a maximum of 20 sessions.\

Most of the county's schools will conclude their spring drills with jamborees played at either Eustis or
Leesburg high schools on May 24.

For most teams, the drills are a chance to go over some plays, take a look at some personnel and to
lay some preliminary groundwork that can be built on when fall practices begin on Aug. 15.

But Mount Dora Coach Hal Cuddy has some different plans for this spring. Cuddy has more kids out
for football this year (50) than he has ever had before. The additional players make it possible for him
to use more contact drills.

''We are going to bang some people around this spring,'' Cuddy said. ''This is the first time that we've
had such a large, aggressive group of kids. We have a lot more competition for jobs than we've ever
had before.''

One spot that is open for competition is at quartback. With the graduation of Kelly Sanders, last year's
varsity reserve quarterback Robert Kelly and Steve Anderson, who quarterbacked the junior varsity
team to a 7-1 record, are fighting it out.

Another area that concerns Cuddy is his offensive line where James Golden, Scott Ponder and Artie
Norris have graduated. In fact, Cuddy labels the offensive line as his biggest concern.

The need to find a quarterback is also one of Clermont Coach Steve Brown's major concerns. The
Highlanders, who finished the season with freshman Harvey Beauford at quarterback, are searching
for another signal caller because Beauford has had academic problems.

Finding people to play the offensive and defensive lines is a high priority.    1   of   2     Next
