It's No Contest-Leesburg Has Toughest Schedule
August 25, 1985|By Creig Ewing of the Sentinel Staff

Updated: Wednesday, April 15, 2015, 1:06 p.m.

TAVARES — Leesburg, the only Class AAA school in Lake and Sumter counties, has by far the most
difficult schedule in the two counties based on opponent's combined winning percentage last year.
Bushnell South Sumter and Umatilla have the most ambitious schedules among Class AA schools.

Leesburg will play 10 opponents with a combined record of 55-48, a winning percentage of .534.
Leesburg's opponents in the new Class AAA, District 5 -- Cocoa Beach, Rockledge, St. Cloud,
Titusville Astronaut and Orlando Jones -- have a combined record of 33-20 (.623).

The rest of the Lake and Sumter schools are in Class AA, District 5, which has a combined record of
43-42, counting the two games Wildwood and Umatilla each had to forfeit as losses.

Umatilla's opponents have the highest winning percentage (.528), while Bushnell South Sumter is
going out of its way to schedule difficult games out of its district. Based simply on opponents' winning
percentage, Mount Dora has the least difficult schedule.

What follows is a list of schedules in order of difficulty. Only non- district opponents are mentioned
because for the AA schools. The district games basically offset each other:

Leesburg (opponents 55-48, .534) -- The Yellow Jackets' district foes make the schedule difficult
enough. The only breather on the schedule is Orlando Bishop Moore (1-9), but Bishop Moore's only
victory last year came on the last game against Leesburg. Other non-district opponents include
Candler Lake Weir (4-6), Eustis (5-5), Inverness Citrus (6-4) and Class AAAA Ocala Vanguard (6-4).

South Sumter (53-50, .515) -- The Raiders didn't schedule a bunch of non- district patsies. They start
the season with Class AAA Dade City Pasco (8-2) and also play AAA Brooksville Hernando (8-2). They
should have a little easier time with Lecanto (1-7).

Umatilla (56-50, .528) -- Umatilla's schedule is very nearly as difficult as South Sumter's. The Bulldogs
play AAA schools Cocoa Beach (6-5) and Rockledge (3-7). They also play AA Pierson Taylor (5-5).

Wildwood (49-54, .478) -- The Wildcats' prey doesn't have a very impressive record based just on
winning percentage, but Wildwood isn't going to waste its time when not playing district games. The
Wildcats play two Class AAAA schools and one AAA. Wildwood begins the season at AAA Alachua
Santa Fe (9-3). New Smyrna Beach (0-10) isn't a powerful AAAA school, but it is one. Wildwood also
plays AAAA Ocala Vanguard (6-4). The only reason Wildwood's schedule isn't the toughest is because
the other teams have to play the Wildcats.

Clermont (47-46, .505) -- Clermont starts the season with Lecanto (1-7). It's most difficult non-district
game should be AAA St. Cloud (6-4). The Highlanders also play Crescent City, the record of which was
not available.

Groveland (51-51, .500) -- Groveland scheduled one of Lake County's favorite common opponents,
Class A Eatonville Wymore Tech (1-7), but made up for that by following with Class AAA Wauchula
Hardee County (9-1). The Greenbacks start the season with AA Newberry (5-4).

Tavares (51-52, .495) -- Tavares' toughest non-district test will be against Class AAA Starke-Bradford
County (7-4). The Bulldogs begin the season with AA Pierson Taylor (5-5), and also play Wymore Tech
(1-7).

Eustis (51-56, .477) -- The hardest part about the Panthers' non-district schedule is that they penciled
in Class AA powerhouse Daytona Beach Father Lopez (10-2) as the homecoming opponent. Eustis
also plays Class AAA Bishop Moore (1-9) and perennial rival Leesburg (2-8).

Mount Dora (44-59, .427) -- The easiest of the bunch. The Hurricanes will stand in line to take shots at
Wymore Tech (1-7), Bishop Moore (1-9) and Pierson Taylor (5-5). The Hurricanes' schedule would be
almost perfect (they play Wildwood at home) except they waste an open date on the first week and
have to play Eustis (5-5) away the next week.
