Leesburg Yellow Jackets vs. Ocala Lake Weir, High School Football Game

Leesburg, Eustis Pull Off Big Surprises In Season Openers

TAVARES — The Leesburg defense and the Eustis offense were the two biggest surprises in season-
opening high school football games last weekend.

Leesburg's defense, which was the least effective of any team in Lake County last year, posted its first
shutout in over two years in a 21-0 victory over Candler Lake Weir Friday night. Eustis, with junior
quarterback Earl Young making his first varsity start, rolled up 306 yards in a solid, 33-0, victory over
Orlando Bishop Moore.

In other games: Pierson Taylor's Larry Freeman gained 120 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead
a 24-7 victory over Tavares; Wildwood's Freddy Douglas scored twice and gained 118 yards to help the
Wildcats to a 31-6 victory over Alachua Santa Fe; Newberry rolled to a 26-0 victory over Groveland;
Lecanto defeated Clermont, 12-7; Cocoa Beach topped Umatilla, 18-15, and Dade City Pasco got past
Bushnell South Sumter, 10-0.

Leesburg defensive coordinator Mike Semanchik said his unit's success came because it had gone
back to the basics.

''We had 11 guys getting after people,'' Semanchik said. ''They're a young group of kids, but they like to
hit. We're expecting some big things out of our defense this year.''

The Yellow Jackets' defensive unit is restructured this season. Fred Payton is the only player returning.
And, he has been moved to outside linebacker from his cornerback spot.

Leesburg now is using multiple defensive sets instead of the 4-3 (four linemen and three linebackers),
which it employed last season.      1   of
