Leesburg, Eustis Pull Off Big Surprises In Season Openers

The defensive leaders were Mike Woods and Fred Allen, both inside linebackers, and tackle Terrance
Johnson. Woods, a 6-1, 200-pound sophomore, had 10 tackles. Allen, a junior, had six tackles, and
Johnson had five. Wayne Prevatt caused one fumble and recovered another, and Kerry Cole also
recovered a fumble.

Jon Cannon, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound fullback, carried the ball 25 times for 143 yards and often hauled
three of four Lake Weir defenders an extra couple of yards before being brought down. Quarterback
Steve Madden scored on a 95- yard run on an option and passed to Kevin Brown for one of his two
touchdowns. Coach Steve Brown said he was pleasantly surprised by Eustis' offensive display,
especially the performance of Young, who hit on 12-of-19 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

''We looked better in that game than we have in practice,'' Brown said. ''The kids looked great. I'm proud
of them.''

Young showed his mobility throughout the game, constantly being chased out of the pocket and forced
to pass on the run.

Junior wide receiver John Lancaster was Young's favorite target, catching five passes for 45 yards.

Umatilla assistant coach Mark Robinson turned into a part-time cheerleader during his team's game
with Cocoa Beach. During a break in play, he turned to the Umatilla bleachers and shouted, ''Hey, what
do you say we make some noise up there.'' He also spent time during the second half encouraging the
crowd to make noise and walking with the Bulldog mascot.

Umatilla is trying to rebuild and regenerate some interest in the community for the program -- even if it
means the coaches have to turn into cheerleaders.    Previous     2   of   3
