District Competition Involves All 9 Lake, Sumter Prep Teams
September 20, 1985|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff (Sentinel correspondent Tim Wilson
contributed to this report.)

All nine high school football teams in Lake and Sumter counties will be participating in first district
games tonight.

For Leesburg, which probably will have to forfeit last week's game against Candler Lake Weir, tonight's
Class AAA, District 5 game against Rockledge will be its first in a new district.

The Yellow Jackets, who previously played in a district with schools from Orange and Seminole
counties, now play a district schedule with three Brevard County teams, along with Orlando Jones in
Orange County and St. Cloud in Osceola County.

The new Class AA, District 5, has united Lake and Sumter teams under one roof.

Here is a look at this week's games:

Wildwood (1-0) at Clermont (0-1): Wildwood, the No. 2-ranked team in the Florida Sports Writers
Association's Class AA poll, should be heavily favored but Coach Buddy Tomaini said he doesn't see
any trouble getting his team motivated for the Class AA, District 5 game.

''Actually, there are a few reasons to get pumped up about Clermont,'' Tomaini said. ''This is our first
district game, and I've never beaten them before. They upset us two years ago and last year we had to
forfeit to them.'' Clermont Coach Bruce Kregloe has a lot of respect for Wildwood so he doesn't expect
to have any problem getting his players motivated.
