St. Cloud Favored Over Baffling Leesburg Friday
November 13, 1986|By Frank Carroll of the Sentinel Staff

Leesburg High School, St. Cloud's opponent at 8 p.m. Friday at Leesburg Memorial Stadium, is an
enigma.

Expected to battle Titusville Astronaut for the district crown, the Yellow Jackets are 3-5 with only one
victory in four district outings.

Leesburg started quickly, sandwiching Candler Lake Weir (25-24) and Eustis (24-0) victories around a
17-14 loss to Rockledge.

Just as suddenly, the Jackets' season fell apart with consecutive losses to Orlando Jones (14-0),
Ocala Vanguard (14-13), Astronaut (20-0) and undefeated Inverness Citrus (27-20) before making
winless Cocoa Beach (0-8) a 34-0 homecoming victim two weeks ago.

''Leesburg's talent -- especially in the offensive line -- is as good as anybody we've played,'' St. Cloud
Coach Danny Rea Smith said. ''I can't figure it out.''

Coach Gene Foster has a bead on the culprit, pointing an accusing finger at turnovers.

Against Jones, the Jackets fumbled five times inside the Tigers' 15 yard line. In the one-point loss to
Vanguard, another fumble inside Ocala's 5 yard line, returned to Leesburg's 3 set up a game-winning
touchdown.

But as much as turnovers, senior quarterback Steve Madden's low-percentage passing output has
turned Foster's game plan toward a ground-hugging attack.
