1987 Head Football Coach Gene Foster
Carver Heights Quarterback Club, Leesburg High School, Leesburg, Florida
Yellow Jackets Have Character Leesburg Has Size, Experience,
Leadership But Green Defensive Line

Leesburg High School Coach Gene Foster does not like to make comparisons. But when he looks at
the personnel on this year's Yellow Jacket football team, he can't help but think back nine years when
he was coaching at
Clermont High School.

The 1977 Highlanders finished second in the Class AA state playoffs to Blountstown -- losing 27-17 in
the title game. Leesburg is a lot like that team.

There's size and experience on the offensive line -- just like in '77.
Tight end Rod Wright , tackles Jay
Connell, Ralph Amadeo, Desmond Harris and Terry Wall, guards Keith Scott and Joe Cornelius and
center
Glenn Burley are all back.

Then there is quarterback Steve Madden, who runs the option offense just like '77 quarterback Donald
Haddock. ''He's the best option quarterback I've had since Donald Haddock. He runs the option like a
genius,'' Foster said of Madden, who has a 3.95 grade-point-average out of a possible 4.0. ''He's a
good team leader, he's aggressive and he's tough.''

Behind Madden is
David Fischer, a junior, who Foster said also is capable of running the team.

Most of all, the team has the same type of kids as the '77 team.

''Characterwise, this is as good a club as I've ever had,'' said Foster, who enters his 30th year of
coaching with a 190-99-14 record, ranking him as the fourth winningest active coach in the state.

Whether the results will be the same as in '77 is something Foster and the Yellow Jackets fans will
have to wait to see. One thing Foster does expect to see is Leesburg in the thick of the Class AAA,
District 5 race.

''We could be a contender,'' Foster said. ''We know
Orlando Jones and Titusville Astronaut will be
tough. Jones is always so big and fast, and Astronaut has the winningest program, precentage-wise,
in the state, barring none.

''But we have always played Jones tough, and Astronaut only beat us, 10-7, in overtime last year. I think
we'll be competitive, if not a little better, than the rest of the teams in the district.''

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets lack experience up front, but their inside linebacking crew of
Fred Allen
and
Mike Wood is tough, and the starting defensive backfield of Scott Duncan, Kevin Brown and Brent
Parker is the same as a year ago.

The only returning varsity players on the defensive line are ends
Scott Mangum, who was up and down
with the junior varsity, and
Robbie Brown, who saw considerable playing time.
