Lake Sports - Football Jamborees: The Preps' Preseason

August 31, 1990|By Jeff Babineau Of The Sentinel Staff
Orlando Sentinel
Updated: Friday, July 3, 1990, 8:19 a.m.

Leesburg and five fellow members of the Orange Belt Conference will get a break from working under
the hot afternoon sun when they gather for the OBC's preseason jamboree tonight at 7 at Osceola
County's Silver Spurs Stadium.

For Leesburg, tonight's jamboree does not offer the best of situations. The Yellow Jackets play the first
quarter against St. Cloud, then will have to wait through three quarters before they return to the field to
face Osceola. Leesburg Coach Ken Weir, though not pleased with the set-up, said the Jackets will try to
make the most of the situation.

''We still have three or four spots where we're looking to see who is going to play,'' Weir said. ''For the
rest of the players, it's pretty much a last practice before we start getting ready for Ocala Forest (Sept. 7).''

Positions yet to be settled upon for the Jackets include two linebacker spots, one inside and one
outside, as well as quick tackle and strong safety. One player who won't be taking tonight's jamboree
very lightly is Ty Lawrence, a sophomore who is 6 feet 1 and 186 pounds. Lawrence is competing for
starting positions at both quick tackle and inside linebacker, battling Clay Rector at the former, and Bart
Graham at the latter.

Weir also will be looking at Geoff Neimeth and Bo Widmann at outside linebacker. Jason Sellers
returns to start at one outside linebacker spot, and Joe Fernandez will man one of the inside linebacker
positions. David Geiger and Bobby Dan McGlohorn are looking to land the starting role at strong safety.

Leesburg, which came on strong midway through last season to win four of its final five games and
finish 5-5, did not play sharply in its spring jamboree against Eustis. The defense played adequately,
though it gave up a long touchdown run to Bayfus McCoy, but the offense never was able to establish
any rhythm.

The Jackets will feature a lot of new faces in their offense this season. Back up front are center Scott
Batsch (6-1, 198), guards Randy Woodall (6-0, 187) and Shane Wheeler (6-0, 218) and Sellers (6-2,
183), who plays tight end. Steve Gooden takes over at quarterback, and he will be optioning the ball to
Oran Singleton, Geiger and McGlohorn. All but McGlohorn, who is a senior, are sophomores. Bryant
Reed and Fernandez will rotate at fullback.

The Jackets are without halfback Willie Foster, a senior who broke his foot before summer practice.

''We've had a real good fall,'' said Weir, who is in his second season as coach of the Jackets. ''Other
than the lack of numbers (the Jackets lost six players to grades), I've been pretty pleased.''

Leesburg's first-quarter opponent, St. Cloud, will feature a new coach and a new offense. John
Wallauer replaces Danny Rea Smith as coach of the defending Class AAA, District 5 champions.
Carlton Partin, a junior, is lost for the season after injuring his knee in practice; and Eric Butler, a
sophomore, is being held out of the jamboree for disciplinary reasons.

Leesburg's other opponent will be Gateway, a team the Jackets defeated, 48-6, in last season's final
game. Gateway finished 0-10 last season.
