Leesburg Yellow Jackets vs. Eustis Panthers, High School Football Game

Leesburg Moves Up A Notch In The Rankins

Former Leesburg High School football coach Ken Weir seems to have settled into his new role as the
head coach at Stuart Martin County High School.

Martin County, ranked fifth in the Class AAAA Florida Sports Writers Association's state poll, opened its
season with a 28-0 victory over Palm Bay on Friday night.

Leesburg, meanwhile moved from its preseason ranking of 10th to ninth, with the help of a 7-6 victory
over Eustis on Friday.

Weir coached at Leesburg for three years, building the Yellow Jackets program, which ended in a
three-way tie for the Class AAAA, District 7 championship the past two years. But Martin County enticed
Weir into leaving Leesburg last spring.

The Yellow Jackets are now coached by a former Weir assistant, Ed Hoffman, who was the defensive
coordinator. Leesburg is the only school in Lake and Sumter counties to be ranked this week.

Speaking of good starts, the Lake Sentinel's new prep football picker, Gerard Shields, had a 6-1 record
in his debut. Shields is a news reporter who covers the county commission for the Lake Sentinel and
also is helping cover high school football games on Friday nights.

Fortunately, Herky Cush upheld the reputation for the sports department with a 7-0 opening week.
