LEESBURG — It was a matter of which team was going to end its frustration first.
That special honor, and the first victory of the season, went to Leesburg which rallied to
defeat Belleview, 27-16 in a nondistrict game Friday at Memorial Field/Hubert O.
The Yellow Jackets (1-6), who ended a 15-game losing skid, spotted Belleview (0-6) a
13-0 lead in the first 3 minutes and 17 seconds of the game.
Running backs Ky Littles and Bishon Roberts, along with quarterback Shaun
Cunningham, sparked the Yellow Jackets to their first victory of the season.
Littles took a shovel pass from Cunningham late in the first period and went 80 yards for
the Yellow Jackets first touchdown of the night.
Trailing 16-7 at the half the Yellow Jackets received another major boost when Roberts
broke 82 yards on the second half kickoff.
Leesburg took its first lead of the night on a 13-yard run by Littles with 1:58 left in the
third period. The Yellow Jackets, its defense halting the Rattlers in the second half,
marched 70 yards on 15 plays.
All but two of the plays were runs, the two passes were incomplete. Twice in the march
the Yellow Jackets gambled on fourth down and picked up the first down yardage. Littles
was the workhorse of the march, picking up 69 yards on 9 carries. Littles rushed for 97
yards, all but 3 of it coming in the second half.
''I get a little tired when I have to carry the ball that much,'' Littles said. ''But I just have to
suck it up if I want to carry it.''
As they did most of the night, the Yellow Jackets had to overcome a holding penalty on
Twice during the night the Yellow Jackets had touchdowns called back because of
penalties. A fourth quarter run of 42 yards by Roberts was wiped out when a late
pitchout from Cunningham was declared to be forward. But the Yellow Jackets
perservered and marched in for the touchdown five plays late on a 4-yard run by
Anthony Walker. A 20-yard run on a keeper play by Cunningham was the big play in the
Not noted for its passing attack, Belleview struck on the first play from scrimmage when
Garrett Robinson combined with Lawrence Mincy on a 66-yard touchdown pass.
After a Leesburg punt traveled only 7 yards the Rattlers moved 40 yards in two plays
with Rodney Thomas scoring from 15 yards out. The Rattlers built their halftime lead to
16-7 when Trey Carroll kicked a 37 yard field goal with 4 seconds to play in the half.
