Leesburg Yellow Jackets vs. Umatilla Bulldogs, High School Football Game

Umatilla Outlasts Leesburg 15-7

LEESBURG -- Umatilla showed that it could score with lightning quickness and that it could also sustain
a drive in Friday night's Kickoff Classic at Dabney Stadium/Memorial Field.

The Kickoff Classics were the only preseason tuneups high school football teams get against
opponents before the regular season begins next week.

If nothing else, Umatilla showed it can move the ball on the ground, finishing the night with 246 yards
rushing on its way to a 15-7 victory over Leesburg in a game played under windy conditions with
threatening skies and a light rain that fell early in the contest.

Willie Rose was the leading rusher for the Bulldogs, finishing the night with 116 yards on five carries
and two touchdowns.

Umatilla struck quickly, just three plays after taking control of the ball on its first possession of the game
on its own 9-yard line. Rose broke loose up the middle on an 84-yard touchdown run.

The Bulldogs' touchdown came after Leesburg had put together a nice drive of its own. But the Yellow
Jackets' drive was aided by a first down that was the result of two successive Umatilla penalties while
Leesburg was back in punt formation.

Leesburg, however, behind the running of Terence Pericles, moved the ball down to the Bulldogs' 9
before losing the ball on a fumble.

The Yellow Jackets did tie the game up 7-7 on its second possession, which came as a result of a
Umatilla fumble -- one of six for the night for the Bulldogs.

Leesburg took control its own 25 and after losing 2 yards on a running play, quarterback Derek Burbank
connected with Francis Cuyler on a 27-yard touchdown pass.

Umatilla scored the winning touchdown in the next period when Rose went in on a 23-yard run.

As good as Umatilla moved the ball, the Bulldogs did have two problems -- the fumbles (losing four of
six) and penalties (seven for 80 yards). Leesburg also had problems with five fumbles and eight
penalties for 70 yards.

Leesburg unveiled an effort to pass a bit more this season and, though Burbank was only 5-of-16 for 44
yards, he was victimized by a couple of dropped passes.

In one quarter of junior varsity action, which preceeded the three varsity quarters, Umatilla defeated
Leesburg 7-0.

Weather played havoc with other Kickoff Classics scheduled for Friday night.

The Tavares at Deltona game was cancelled because of lightning and rain and the Pierson Taylor at
Mount Dora game was delayed for quite a while because of a lightning storm. Mount Dora won 40-0.

In another Kickoff Classic:

Oak Ridge at South Lake: South Lake dropped a 7-3 decision to Orlando Oak Ridge, which scored on
its first possession of the game. South Lake quarterback David Taylor connected on only 6-of-16
passes and had two interceptions for 48 yards.

The Eagles finally scored in the final quarter when Jared Hilston kicked a 23-yard field goal.
