Leesburg Yellow Jackets vs. Clermont East Ridge Knights, High School Football Game

9 Area Teams Compete Tonight As Spring Drills Draw To Close

High School Football - Spring Practice

South Lake Hosts A Four-team Jamboree

Five Other Schools Are Playing Spring Games.

Lake County's high school students will be taking their academic final exams next week, but for the
area's football players, their finals are tonight.

A longer-than-usual session of spring drills -- where most teams were able to get in at least 17
practice sessions of the state allowed maximum 20 -- come to an end tonight with spring games or
jamborees. All nine of the varsity teams in the Lake and Sumter counties area will be in action.

The Villages Charter High School, which is beginning a football program in the fall, participated in a
junior varsity jamboree last week in Ocala.

Because Lake County's public schools are ending their school year a week later this year than they
have in past years, the football teams were able to get in several extra days of work.

"Obviously, any time you can get in extra work, it's a big help,'' South Lake Coach Charles Weems said.
"We have gotten a lot of things done. A lot of young kids worked on the basic fundamentals, we worked
on our basic offense and defense and hope to finish off with two good quarters [tonight] against South
Sumter.''

South Lake is hosting the biggest convergence of area football teams tonight. In a jamboree being
played at Eagles Field at 7:30, East Ridge will play Leesburg for one half before South Lake and South
Sumter play in the second half.

All the other teams in the area will be playing in spring games with Umatilla at Tavares (6:30 p.m.),
Eustis at Crystal River (6 p.m.) and Mount Dora meeting Wildwood at Eustis High School (7:30 p.m.)
because the football fields at both schools are under repair.

The atmosphere around Leesburg's football practices this year has been much different than it was a
year ago when the players had to adjust to a new coaching staff. This year, Coach Charles Nassar
and his staff, feel like they are way ahead of where they were a year ago.

"We were such a young team last year,'' Nassar said. "This year we are returning a large number of
players. We are not starting from scratch in terms of an offense and a defense.

"We have been more advanced in terms of fundamentals, in terms of schemes. We know how we
want to practice. The kids understand what the expectation is.''

Eustis and Wildwood were two other teams who, a year ago, were adjusting to new coaches with
Steve Moser taking over the Panthers and Robert Lindsey heading up Wildwood.

This year, there were no changes in head coaches with any of the area's football teams.

Tonight's East Ridge-Leesburg game does have a unique twist.

Both teams, along with South Lake, will be playing in the same district in the fall so the game could be
a precursor to the district race. East Ridge also is coached by Leesburg's former coach, Bud O'Hara,
who left the Yellow Jackets to take the job at East Ridge a year ago.

"There are a lot of pitfalls here. We are playing against the guy who used to coach here and it is a
district opponent,'' Nassar said. "But we are not looking at this as a game. We are approaching it as
another scrimmage, a chance to prepare for the end of August [when the season begins].''
