LEESBURG -- The Leesburg Yellow Jackets' defense forced four Eustis turnovers, and its triple-option
offensive attack capitalized, giving the Jackets a big 27-7 season-opening win Friday night at Hubert O.
Dabney Stadium.

Eustis, the Class 2A Lake County rival, came into town with a lot of expectations.

After a disappointing 2-8 season a year ago, so did Class 4A Leesburg.

"It's absolutely a new attitude," said second-year coach Charles Nassar, who credits his team's
offseason dedication to the weights for the renewed spirit.

"We're different. That weight room has transformed our psyche."

The Yellow Jackets were led on the ground Friday by Shon Gunn, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound fullback.

The junior finished the night with 85 yards on 22 carries.

The game was sloppy from the start, with both teams showing Week One jitters.

The teams combined for five turnovers in the first half.

While each squad kept the ball on the ground, the Yellow Jackets relied on their defense to maintain a
10-0 lead.

Leesburg took a lot of momentum into the halftime after a surprising play-call right before time expired
in the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets blocked a Eustis field goal with just 15 seconds on the clock.

Rather than run out the clock on the ensuing possession, Leesburg went for one final play.

Yellow Jackets' quarterback Brett Pitchford threw the ball over the middle and found senior Larry Foster
as the final seconds ran down.

Foster ran all the way to the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown, giving Leesburg a 17-0 halftime lead.

"We have some good athletes on this team," Nassar said.

"What was the worst that would have happened?

" They intercept the ball 40 yards downfield?"

The Yellow Jackets opened the first half with a drive that lasted nearly nine minutes, capped by
Stephen Malinda's 40-yard field goal.

It took Eustis less than a minute to answer, with three runs by Joe Burnett.

The junior fullback opened the drive with a 69-yard run and scored two plays later from 5 yards out for
the Panthers' first touchdown of the season, cutting the Yellow Jackets' lead to 20-7.

Leesburg, though, opened the fourth quarter with a quick touchdown strike, after recovering a Eustis
fumble.

Pitchford hit junior tailback Trent McKibben with a 35-yard touchdown strike to make it 27-7 and put the
game out of reach.

Eustis finished the game with three fumbles and an interception, which resulted in 17 Leesburg points.

The Yellow Jackets' other touchdown came following a blocked field goal.

Burnett led Eustis with 187 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries, including runs of 69 and 50.
