LEESBURG - Charles Nassar called his disconsolate players together, urged them to get closer and
began what might well have been the most important speech of his life.

He didn't reprimand his players for a 21-14 loss to Spring Hill Springstead Friday night. He didn't tell
them what they could have done better. He didn't criticize anyone.

Instead, sounding as much like a preacher as a football coach, he told them how he hurt for each one
of them, how he wanted a victory, not for himself, but for them, how he appreciated each one's effort
and courage.

And after he was done, when the last Leesburg player had trudged into the locker room, Nassar got
down on one knee in the H. O. Dabney Stadium end zone, put his hand in his face and wept.

"I just want people to understand how hard they work," he said a few minutes later, tears still streaking
his face. "I've coached on championship teams. I've played on championship teams. I've never been
around kids that work like these kids."
