Leesburg Yellow Jackets vs Tavares Bulldogs, High School Football Game

Tavares Holds Off Leesburg 42-28 To Remain Undefeated
LAKE SPORTS - Game Day
October 9, 2004|By Joe Williams, Sentinel Staff Writer

LEESBURG -- For most of the first half, Tavares' injured running back Dominique Rocker stood on the
sidelines, baseball cap on, arms folded, looking like he had no intention of being on the field.

But when backup running back D'Andrea Vaughn went to the sideline on the final play of the first quarter
with a left knee injury and took his spot on the bench with an ice pack on his knee, Rocker entered the
game.

It took him just five touches on the ball to make something happen.

Tavares quarterback Stephen Brooker hit Rocker on a slant pattern, and Rocker raced down the left
sideline for a 79-yard touchdown that seemed to ignite the Bulldogs (5-0), ranked third in the Class 2A
Florida Sports Writers Association's poll, as Tavares defeated Class 4A Leesburg 42-28 Friday night at
H.O. Dabney Stadium.

Leesburg (2-4) became the third team in as many weeks that Tavares has jumped on in the first half,
and for the third time in as many weeks, there were a few anxious moments in the second half for the
Bulldogs.

After trailing 28-7 at halftime, Leesburg quarterback Tyler Hill opened the second half with a 42-yard
touchdown run on the half's fifth play. Hill later hit on touchdown passes of 35 yards to Tory Harrison
and 36 yards to Anthony Saincilaire to keep the game close.

But unlike in the past two weeks, when Tavares had to hang on in the second half to beat Keystone
Heights 36-29 and Umatilla 35-30, Tavares was able to keep a cushion on its lead thanks to
second-half touchdown runs by T.C. Smith, who finished with 112 yards and three touchdowns and
Rocker, who had 58 yards rushing, 96 yards receiving on two catches, and also ran for three
touchdowns.

With Rocker still nursing an injured right thigh, Tavares relied on the running of Smith and its defense
to build the first-half lead.

Smith scored on runs of 19 and 5 yards for Tavares to take a 14-0 lead, and the Bulldogs capitalized on
a short field throughout the half.

Leesburg had five turnovers in the first half -- four lost fumbles and an interception -- and Tavares' first
two touchdowns came on drives of 35 and 25 yards.

Leesburg, however, momentarily got back into the game at 14-7 behind the running of fullback Shon
Gunn. Gunn, who rushed for 99 yards on 11 carries in the game, broke free on a run of 46 yards to
move the ball to Tavares' 19 and then carried the ball three more times before busting into the end
zone on a 9-yard run.

Rocker, however, then scored on his long pass play three minutes and 7 seconds later and then, after
Brooker hit Tavares wideout Jermaine Taylor on a 25-yard pass play, Rocker scored again on a 1-yard
run with 1:26 left to go in the second quarter, giving Tavares its 28-7 lead.
