Spring Games Galore

Several Lake And Sumter Football Squads Play Their Spring Games Tonight.

"The kids are real excited about the opportunity to play in the Citrus Bowl.''

Umatilla Coach Ron Timson said his team has many of the same feelings about going to the Citrus
Bowl to play.

"I think it adds something to it,'' Timson said. "You don't get a chance to play in a venue like that unless
you get to the [state] finals and play it in The Swamp [at the University of Florida].''

Eustis' spring game will mark the return of former Eustis and Mount Dora head football coach Craig
Cosden. Cosden left Mount Dora and spent last season as an assistant coach at Webber International
University. He is now assisting Coach Steve Moser at Eustis.

For Umatilla, Leesburg and Eustis, as well as all the other teams in the two-county area, tonight's
games will not be as much about winning as it will be about finding some players who can fill holes in
the fall. .

"We have been missing several kids from the baseball team [whose season ended Tuesday night in
the regional final], but it has given us some opportunities to give some other kids some reps,'' Nassar
said. "Our numbers have been way up from where they were two years ago. We started the spring with
80 players from JV and varsity.''

Finding replacements for some skill positions were the top priorities for both Eustis and Umatilla. Both
schools are looking for new quarterbacks, and Umatilla is trying to replace four-year starting fullback
Dontrel Lewis.

"Obviously, we've had to replace our quarterback with Derrick Johnson graduating,'' Moser said. "Steve
Repass is back out after taking last year off to concentrate on basketball, and he will start the spring
game. It is nice to have [running back] Joe Burnett back. Last year, he was on the state run with the
baseball team.

"We also have lost three of five linemen. I think the kids have come along pretty well.''

Replacing Lewis at Umatilla could fall on the shoulders of Jesse Dutton, a backup fullback last
season, and Cale Chavis. Dontrel Russell, a defensive end from a year ago, and Dexter Hill, the
reserve at quarterback from last season, will be evaluated for the starting quarterback position.

"Replacing 16 seniors is not an easy task,'' Timson said. "We are just going to have to fill the bill, get
them experience."
