BROOKSVILLE — Leesburg took Hernando's best punch on Friday night and just kept coming.

Despite allowing 28 points in the second half, the Leopards were able to escape with a 41-28 victory
and sneak into second place in Class 3A, District 6.

Hernando (4-2, 3-1) surpassed its 2008 win total behind the rushing of Alvin Delaine (23 carries,
201 yards, two touchdowns). Delaine scored the first two Leopards touchdowns. He trotted in from
27 yards out to put Hernando up 6-0 in the first quarter then made an amazing one-handed
touchdown catch to put it up 14-0.

"Alvin is a special player," Hernando coach John Palmer said. "He means so much to our team, and
he has that extra dimension that all great running backs have."

The three trips to pay dirt gave the junior tailback 16 touchdowns this year. Coming into this season,
he had only three career scores.

Fullback Marlin Smith (12 carries, 64 yards) also added three touchdowns.

After being shut out in the first half, Leesburg (4-3, 2-2) opened the third quarter with a 3-yard
touchdown run by Luther McDowell (11 carries, 89 yards). McDowell added a 36-yard touchdown
pass on the next drive. The Yellow Jackets defense forced two fumbles from Hernando and was
within seven points as the game wound down.

Hernando buckled down on its final drive, and Delaine cemented the victory with a 12-yard rush to
the end zone.

"We had to win this game," Delaine said. "Our goal this season is to reach the playoffs and turn this
program around."
