Jackets, Panthers set to renew rivalry

LEESBURG -- Randy Trivers knows what playing a rival means.

The Leesburg High School football coach has not thought about Eustis' winless record, nor has he
spent a lot of time glossing over the Panthers statistics.

In fact, Trivers believes that season records and statistics mean nothing in a rivalry game. When the
Yellow Jackets and Panthers face off at 7 p.m. today in Eustis, Trivers will look across the field and see
a team capable of throwing a monkey wrench into Leesburg's postseason hopes.

"I haven't any thought about their record," Trivers said of the Panthers. "I've seen a lot of things on film
that showed me that Eustis can win this game. This is a dangerous team. They've got a lot of athletes
over there who are capable of doing things to beat you. Plus, the fact this is a rivalry game, and you
through the records out.

"They're going to bring to best game to the field and we better be ready for it."

Leesburg enters the contest with a two game winning streak and an unbeaten record in Class
3A-District 6 play. The Yellow Jackets (3-2 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A-6) have put themselves into
postseason contention with a stifling defense that has limited its last two opponents to 15 points,
while scoring 55 against Inverness Citrus and Brooksville Nature Coast.

Trivers believes the Yellow Jackets' defensive play has helped stabilize his team while his offensive
players continue to learn the intricacies of the spread offense he introduced during the summer.

"Our defense has been playing really well, particularly the last weeks," Trivers said. "Nature Coast was
loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball and our kids did a great job limiting their
opportunities to make big plays. We've got a lot of guys getting to the ball and playing as a team.

"We're getting closer to playing a complete game on both sides of the ball."

In last week's win, Chase O'Donnell stepped up with two interceptions to snuff out potential scoring
drives by Nature Coast.

On the offensive side, sophomore quarterback Undra Mitchem continued to grow and become an
offensive leader.

For the season, Mitchem has completed 53 percent of his passes for 934 yards with 14 touchdowns
and only four interceptions.

"Undra has been making a lot of progress in his ability to manage the game," Trivers said. "He's
getting better at making decisions on the field and he's throwing the ball with a lot of accuracy and
command. He is showing more and more confidence in his receiving corps.

"He's only a sophomore, but he's beginning to play with a lot of poise."

Mitchem's favorite receiver has been D'Mauri Jones, who has caught 17 passes with eight
touchdowns. Jones is averaging 17.2 yards per catch.

Jalen Dozier (13 catches), Jake Cavender (12) and Luther McDowell (11) also have been preferred
targets for Mitchem.

The game will mark the 78th meeting between Eustis and Leesburg.
