Leesburg Yellow Jackets vs. Tavares Bulldogs, HIgh School Football Game

Leesburg beats Tavares 33-14 in key district win

Leesburg imposed its will in a key district road win over Tavares 33-14 on Friday night.

In a contest with postseason implications, the visiting Yellow Jackets outplayed the Bulldogs in all
phases of the game. Both squads came into the game locked in a three-way tie with Hernando for the
runner-up playoff berth in the Class 3A, District 6 race behind undefeated district leader Dunnellon.

But it was Leesburg (5-3, 4-1 in 3A-6) who clearly came to play. Setting the tone on the second play of
their opening first-quarter drive, 'Jackets RB Anthony Miller broke loose on a 51-yard touchdown run and
an early lead. Miller was the game's top ground gainer, with 95 yards overall on 11 carries.

Leesburg's ball-hogging defense helped win the field-position battle, with DE Robert Jones pouncing
on two fumbles to snuff out a pair of Tavares first-half drives.

Jackets sophomore QB Undra Mitchem was smooth under center, completing 15 of 27 passes and a
pair of scoring tosses to WRs Jake Cavender and D'Mauri Jones.

Tavares (4-3, 3-2) was its own worst enemy, coughing up six turnovers. Still, QB CJ Calloway fought
gamely, on 17 of 27 passing for 202 yards. Dacquan Victor was his prime target, racking up 92 yards off
seven receptions.

Leesburg 33 Tavares 14

First- L: Miller 51 run (Rizzo kick). Second- L: Cavender 35 pass from Mitchem (Rizzo kick); L: Rizzo 33
