The Leesburg Yellow Jackets beat the visiting Umatilla Bulldogs handily Thursday night 48-13 in their
spring football game. Leesburg looked dominant despite graduating most of the starting offensive and
defensive lines and having to fill key skill positions. Despite the scoreboard deficit, Umatilla looked
impressive as it rotated through a variety of player combinations trying to find the right chemistry for the
read option offense that they are adopting for the upcoming season.
Leesburg scored early in the first quarter on a scoop-and-run fumble return by Bryant Benton who
picked up the ball on the bounce around the 35 yard line for the touchdown and 7-0 lead after James
Umatilla responded with an 11-play drive culminating in a touchdown when Justin Lewis hit Caleb
Robinson from 16 yards out. Edwardo Cosio’s PAT evened the score 7-7 with 6:40 remaining in the
The Jackets took over the game thereafter, using a variant of the spread offense run mainly out of a
shotgun formation. Using a play calling scheme that kept Umatilla guessing where the attack was
coming from, Leesburg quickly moved into the red zone before stalling and settling for an Eldridge 27
yard field goal to lead 10-7. After forcing Umatilla to punt on their next possession Leesburg again
looked sharp in driving to the 10-yard line before a sack by Tyler Belyeu killed the drive and forced
Leesburg to settle for another 30 yard field goal to extend the lead to 13-7.
After an exchange of possessions Leesburg was up 20-7 after Jabari Dunham scored on a 20 -yard
scamper and the Yellow Jacket offense was in full stride as its defense forced Umatilla into short
The overall look for Leesburg is good for the 2013 season. The offense still needs tweaks, but that will
come with experience as the Yellow Jackets have excellent skill players and are filling the holes left by
graduation. With the defense forcing 3 turnovers during the game, there is much to be optimistic about
as they were effective at shutting down Umatilla’s running game.
Although Umatilla took the loss in the contest, they too have much to be excited about in 2013 as they
seem to have found the right offense for their personnel and played disciplined defense that
successfully slowed a potent Leesburg offense.
