Leesburg playing Eustis on the football field is an institution.

It’s a big game, not only for residents of the rival cities, but for Lake County and Central Florida, too.

The Yellow Jackets and Panthers will square off at 7 p.m. today in the
Panther Den in Eustis for the 71st
time since their first game in the 1920s. At the time, Leesburg and Eustis were two of the major players
in
Central Florida high school football.

Over the years, other schools have come along as the region has grown into one of the nation’s largest
metropolitan areas, but when the Panthers and Yellow Jackets get together for their annual gridiron
clash, everything else is small potatoes.

“This is the oldest rivalry in Central Florida and it’s a very exciting game,”
Leesburg coach Rich Maresco
said. Maresco has never coached a game in the rivalry, but he has studied the history between the two
teams. “When rivals like Leesburg and Eustis get together, it doesn’t matter what their records are. The
only thing that matters is beating the other team. It’s a big deal.”

Leesburg leads Eustis in the series 40-24-1. The Yellow Jackets enter the game having won the past
six matchups, including last year’s 19-7 victory.
