With spring football well underway, here’s the first of a two-day look at how things are going at some of
the area schools:

Leesburg

First-year
Yellow Jackets head coach Doug Allison has been quickly finding out which of his players
are willing to buy into his program and do what it takes to be successful.

“We’ve really set the standards high and probably some athletes felt it was too tough,” Allison said. “In
the long run, we’ve kind of made it a refining fire. We’re making sure that the kids who stick with it have
what it takes to compete. They may not have quite as much talent, but one of the quotes I like is ‘hard
work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.’”

The team, coming off a disappointing 3-7 season a year ago, will hold an intra-squad game Friday at 5
p.m. The assistant coaches got together and held a draft to split up the squad into two teams.

“It was a lot of fund having the draft,” Allison said. “The game will be good for the kids down on the
depth chart and give them a chance to get out there and play.”

So far for Leesburg, the defense has been a little ahead of the offense, which is fine with Allison.

“I think our offense will gel as we go along,” Allison said. “If you need to have one unit prepared, it
would be the defense. If they don’t score, they don’t win. I think our defense can keep us in games as
our offense builds confidence.”
