LEESBURG — The Leesburg High football program hit hard times last season. So when Leesburg
principal Bill Miller put together a selection committee to look for the school’s third head coach in the
span of a year, he was aiming high.

He wanted someone who could bring back the good times for the Yellow Jackets on the field. He also
wanted someone who would restore some continuity in the program.

Enter Doug Allison, a former high school coach in Virginia who had moved with his wife, Dana, and four
children to Florida after taking a job at Class 1A Hilliard in the northern part of the state to be closer to
family.

“We assembled a football selection committee with 10 to 12 members, including some returning
seniors,” Miller said of the process that resulted in the recent hiring of Allison. “Doug came in and just

unanimous decision by the committee so no one could say ‘my guy didn’t get it.’ We got that
unanimous decision with Doug.”

School in South Hill, Va., and loved the area. But the lure of coaching in Florida was strong, too. As he
says, for a high school coach this state is the “big leagues.”

“Leesburg has a lot of similarities to South Hill as far as the demographics and some of the
characteristics that come to play with the community,” said the 37-year-old Allison. “I very much felt at
home right away.
