Spring football practice.

It’s the annual rite of passage for area programs looking to take a positive attitude and/or a winning
tradition into the summer and beyond.

Teams will flock to practice fields all around Lake and Sumter counties today, as the first of five days of
non-contact drills begin. Saturday will be the first day teams can take part in contact drills.

For players, it’s an opportunity to sweat away the rustiness of winter and get reacclimated to hearing the
language of the gridiron.

Established programs, those with returning coaching staffs, use the spring session for a variety of
purposes. Some will be looking to answer questions that were created by the loss of graduating
players, while other programs might be seeking to build upon the success of the previous season.

For incoming coaches, the spring presents them with a chance to begin laying the foundation they hope
will lead to countless victories in the fall.

The reward for most players and coaches pushing themselves through the afternoon heat and humidity
will be the annual spring games against actual opponents rather than teammates. Those games are
set to begin on May 15 and will wrap up for local teams by May 22.

For five teams, spring will give their players an opportunity to get familiar with new coaching staffs.

In Leesburg, Doug Allison has replaced Rich Maresco, and in Tavares, David LaMarre replaces Chris
Gauntlett. Donnie Burchfield has stepped in at Mount Dora, replacing Ben Bullock, and in Wildwood,
Casey Strickland, who was named interim coach last October, was given the job on a full-time basis.
