LEESBURG – The Mark Oates era officially started on February 13, 2017 and the Jacket Nation is excited
about his return to the school and the football program’s new direction. Oates becomes the
31st Head
coach in the programs 93-year history. Oates loves Leesburg High School and the Leesburg
community; additionally, Oates has plans on rebuilding the program and competing for a District
Championship in year one. By the same token, Oates realizes that a building the program into a State
Championship Contender will take some time.

“Winning a state title is something that all programs should aspire to do”, Oates said in an interview
with the Carver Heights Quarterback Club. “You must first have the players capable of pulling off such a
feat and secondly the coaching staff must be locked in and teaching proper technique daily. Winning a
title also requires some luck as far as staying away from penalties and matchup pairings.”

In light of, the Jackets coming off of 3 consecutive losing seasons for first time in more than 20 years;
as well as, his two predecessors combining for only 9 wins in that time span; in either case, the sky is
the limit for a once proud program. In addition, community support has been overwhelming; equally
important, is that kids love to play for him; as a result, you should see a 110% effort on the field on
Friday nights.

“Being back on the Leesburg High School campus as a staff member is great,” Oates said when he
was asked about he felt about being back at Leesburg. “I am honored, humbled, and extremely excited
to lead the football program back to glory.”

Oates expects to have over 100 players come out for Spring Practice which starts on April 24th and
ends with the Jackets hosting Umatilla in the Spring Game on May 16, at Leesburg Memorial Field at
Hubert O. Dabney Stadium.

All things considered, it is easy to see why there is excitement in the halls of Leesburg High School, the
Jacket Nation and the City of Leesburg again.
