LEESBURG — Anyone coming out to Leesburg’s H.O. Dabney Stadium on Friday night to see senior
quarterback Wyatt Rector put on another dazzling display of passing would have left disappointed.

There was plenty of offense, just not from the Yellow Jackets.

Gainesville High scored on six straight possessions in the first half to blow the game open and the
Hurricanes’ defense kept Leesburg’s record-setting quarterback in check all night as Gainesville
breezed to a 49-14 win.

Rector, who threw for a county record 592 yards a week ago in a win over South Lake, was held to 36
yards passing in his final homecoming game while going 6 of 21 with two interceptions.

He did manage 104 yards rushing on 14 carries, setting up the Yellow Jackets’ lone offensive score
with a long run. But the Hurricanes held Leesburg to 166 yards of offense for the night.

Gainesville (5-2, 2-1 Class 6A-District 5) got a clinical performance from junior quarterback Luke
Matthews, who hit 11 of 17 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

The Hurricanes also rushed for five scores, led by Niles Cromwell with 110 yards and two touchdowns
on five carries.

Leesburg (4-4, 2-2) was throttled on offense by a swarming Gainesville defense with Rector spending
most of his time looking for receivers while being chased by Gainesville defensive linemen.

The Yellow Jackets had two first downs in the opening quarter and both came with the help of penalties
on the Hurricanes.

Gainesville, meanwhile, moved the ball at will against Leesburg’s defense.

The Hurricanes needed only one play on their second possession of the game to open the scoring
after a short punt by Leesburg. Matthews hit a wide-open Jalen Kelsey over the middle and Kelsey went
41 yards for the score and a 6-0 lead with 10:03 left in the first quarter.

Proving it was going to be a long night for Leesburg’s defense, Gainesville again converted on a short
field on its next possession. Starting at the Yellow Jackets’ 43 and needing only five plays to score,
Cromwell finished the drive with a 4-yard run. A 2-point conversion made it 14-0 with 4:19 remaining in
the opening quarter.

Leesburg used special teams to answer that score after the Yellow Jackets’ went three-and-out. Isaiah
Byrd plucked the ball out of the hands of Gainesville’s punt returner as he fought for extra yards and
raced 45 yards for the score to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 1:59 to go in the quarter.

A 60-yard return on the ensuing kickoff by Xavier White set the Hurricanes up on the Leesburg 21 and
Kinnzon Hutchinson capped a three-play drive with a 5-yard run for a 21-7 lead with 45 seconds left in
the first quarter.

A 55-yard run by Cromwell on the second play of Gainesville’s next possession made it 28-7 early in
the second quarter. Then, following a Rector fumble, Willie McKnight scored on a 14-yard run for a 35-7
lead with 6:20 to go until the half.

Gainesville came back with its best drive of the half, getting a 42-yard run from Rector before Jatavian
Solomon punched it in from the 3 to make it 35-14 with 1:57 left in the half.

That was still more than enough time for Gainesville, which went 60 yards in seven plays and scored
on an 11-yard pass from Matthews to Jordyn Howard. That sent the Hurricanes into the locker room
with a 42-14 lead.

After being stopped by a fumble on its first possession of the second half, Gainesville brought on the
running clock with a six-play drive following an interception that was capped with a 4-yard run by Jaquel
Bryant-Mitchell. Bryant Mitchell had 34 on the 46 yards on the drive on four carries.

Leesburg wraps up district play next week against Lake Weir before hosting Lake Minneola in the final
game of the regular season.
