GROVELAND — Whenever Leesburg and South Lake hook up on the football field, it’s often a thriller.

Friday’s matchup at Eagles Stadium was that ... and then some.

Wyatt Rector threw for more than 500 yards and scored on a seven-yard blast with 27 seconds to play
to give the Yellow Jackets a 47-40 win in a Class 6A-District 5 contest.

Leesburg improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Class 6A-5. South Lake fell to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in Class
6A-5.

Rector’s game-winning heroics followed the second of two fourth-quarter fumbles by South Lake
running back Kelley Joiner, who ran for 402 yards and scored five touchdowns. Joiner’s second
fumble occurred at the Eagles’ 31-yard line with two minutes, four seconds to play.

Rector methodically worked the ball into the red zone as the clock wound down inside the final minute.

After a couple of failed pass attempts, Rector blasted over to seal the win.

He finished with three touchdown passes and two running scores, but also tossed a pair of
interceptions.

Leesburg’s only lead was Rector’s final score, but the game was a back-and-forth affair. South Lake
got on the scoreboard first and it wasted little time doing so.

After stopping a Leesburg drive when Shamar Yee intercepted a Rector pass in the end zone, the
Eagles went right to work. South Lake’s first play was a 28-yard run by Joiner followed by an
incomplete pass by quarterback Baylie Heuser.

On South Lake’s third play of the game, Joiner raced 52 yards for his opening score of the game.

Leesburg responded with an eight-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with a five-yard touchdown pass
to Cordrayius Graham to tie the game. Thirteen of the Yellow Jackets’ first 15 plays were passes.

Joiner put South Lake back on the Eagles’ next possession, when he raced 43 yards for his second
score of the opening quarter. In his first four carries, Joiner had 128 yards and two touchdowns.

And he was just getting started ... just like Rector.

Leesburg put together another lengthy drive, mostly on the arm of Rector. The Yellow Jackets went 70
yards in 11 plays, but the drive ran out of steam at the South Lake 10-yard line.

From there, Kylan Mattiucci booted a 27 yard field to close the deficit to 14-10.

Joiner added a third touchdown – a 29 yarder – in the second quarter, to close out the Eagles’ scoring
before intermission.

In the closing seconds of the first half, Leesburg closed to within 21-18 when Travon Austin grabbed a
deflected pass from Rector and raced 63 yards for the touchdown.

Rector finished with 334 passing yards in the first half.

South Lake scored on its opening possession of the third quarter. Joiner capped the drive with his
fourth score of the game, an eight-yard run.

Back came the Yellow Jackets.

Leesburg marched down the field, capping a 67-yard drive with a one-yard run on fourth down by
Rector. South Lake had kept the Yellow Jackets on three plays inside the one before Rector got in.

South Lake answered with a 68-yard kickoff return by Ian Nelson, taking the ball to Leesburg’s two.
Two plays later Zachery Martin blasted in from one-yard out for a 34-26 lead.

Joiner added his fifth rushing touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter on a four-yard run. The
score gave Joiner 10 touchdowns in his last eight quarters – he scored five rushing touchdowns in
last week’s 49-31 win against Eustis.
