Leesburg coach Mark Oates said he had one question for his standout quarterback, Wyatt Rector,
before last week’s district football game against South Lake.

“I asked him if his arm was loose,” Oates said with a chuckle on Wednesday.

Rector replied with a “Yes, sir,” and the fireworks were lit.

“I told him, ‘That’s good, because this might be your coming-out party. We’re going to air that sucker
out,’” Oates recalls. “I knew we would have to score on just about every possession against South Lake
because their running game is so good.”

Rector, a Virginia commit, threw the ball 52 times, completing 38 for 592 yards and three touchdowns
in a rollercoaster ride of a 47-40 victory. The 6-3, 215-pound senior also ran 15 times for 70 yards and
two TDs.

Rector won the game for the Yellow Jackets (4-3) with a 7-yard touchdown keeper with 27 seconds to
go.

“He was fantastic,” Oates said. “We needed every yard.”

South Lake (4-3) junior running back Kelley Joiner ran for 402 yards and five touchdowns in the loss to
push his area-leading season rushing total to 1,649 yards. He broke the Eagles’ single-game record of
367 yards previously held by former UF track and football speedster Jeff Demps.

Joiner ran for 302 yards and scored six times in a 49-31 win over Eustis two weeks ago.

Rector’s passing yardage for the game ranks third on the all-time state list behind two back-to-back
2014 600-yard-plus performances by former Lake Nona passing whiz Tucker Israel.

Israel, now a redshirt sophomore reserve QB for Clemson, threw for 659 yards and eight TDs in a 59-
42 win over St. Cloud and followed up with 630 yards and nine TD passes in a 73-22 blowout of
Celebration.

Leesburg has its homecoming game Friday against a challenging opponent, Gainesville (4-2).
