Lake Weir scored 47 points in the first half and never looked back as the Hurricanes rolled to a 47-21
road win over Leesburg.

The Hurricanes improve to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in District 6A-5. First-year head coach Knox Robinson
has completely turned the Hurricanes’ program around, delivering Lake Weir its first winning season
in 10 years.

Lake Weir quarterback Deiontae Simpkins accounted for five total touchdowns — four passing, and
one rushing.

The 6-foot, 200-pound junior threw two TD passes to Brian Dillard, and two to Marshawn Mister.

Lake Weir running back Zian King ran for a score, and Tavoo Randall also had a rushing TD for the ’
Canes.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes’ defense stifled the Yellow Jackets on two fourth down attempts in the first
half, led each time on tackles-for-a-loss by safety Gene Reid.

“We had Gene come in from his safety spot and rolled him in the box,” Robinson said.

Isiah Patterson had one sack and multiple tackles from his defensive line spot for LWHS.

Leesburg turned the tables in the second half against the Hurricanes’ reserves, holding Lake Weir
scoreless while scoring 21.

“We emptied the bench and were able to get a lot of our younger guys in there,” Robinson said. “We
had both our second and third string quarterbacks in there ... (Leesburg) had a pick six in the fourth
quarter. It was good to get some of the kids in there from the scout team and junior varsity.”

Lake Weir hosts Inverness Citrus next week, while Leesburg will visit Lake Minneola.
