Upsetting The Dope

By Seth Whitmore
St. Petersburg Times
Saturday, November 12, 1927

St. Petersburg 24; Miami 7
Hillsborough 0; Lakeland 6

Thus Andrew Jackson high of Jacksonville remains the only undefeated major high school
eleven in Florida, Arcadia, heretofore unbeaten, fell before Fort Myers, leaving Leesburg as the
only minor team with a clean slate, but who has Leesburg played?

Oh, yes, they beat Plant City 13 to 12, and Tampa defeated the team 44 to 0, but still Leesburg
has a claim to the state championship.

If Andrew Jackson's Tigers and Leesburg's Wildcats go through the rest of the season
undefeated it is likely they will meet for the state title, and of course the Jacksonville outfit will
walk away with a 50 to nothing victory.

But, on the other hand, someone who has funny ideas, is planning a state football tournament.
Probably the State High School athletic association planned the tourney, thinking in advance that
they might be forced to donate the state championship to our Green Devils.

A state football tournament would last for three weeks at least and would be too strenuous for the
players who have already played through hard schedules. If St. Petersburg defeats Tampa the
state championship should go to Andrew Jackson and Leesburg; if unbeaten, should receive
second or B class honors.

Captain Pheil sure played a wonderful game yesterday and cannot receive too much credit for his
work. Captain of the All-State eleven will not be too good for our worthy leader-one of the greatest
high school tackles that ever played in Florida interscholastic football.
