Eustis Favored In Panther-Jacket Contest Set For Eustis Tonight

By Jimmy Allen
The Leesburg Commercial Ledger
Thursday, November 27, 1952

One of the oldest and hottest football rivalries of Central Florida will be renewed in Eustis tonight when
the Panthers take on the Leesburg Yellow Jackets.

Coach Charlie Broadway's Panthers rate a heavy favorite on the strength of their season's standing,
but
predictions are likely to go by the board when these nearby schools meet in any endeavor.

Eustis sports a respectable 6-3 record for the season, with 130 points against their opponents 77,
scoring
slightly over 15 points per game.

Gorilla Tom Branton, Joe McCree, Jimmy Adler, and little David Ayers have been the big Panther guns
in
piling up the two touchdown per game average, with Ayers filling in for Adler since the speedy back
broke
his arm midway in the season.

The Jackets have had another disappointing season, showing only one win against seven losses and
one
tie; scoring 86 points to their opponents 159. Leesburg's win was a fine effort against Melbourne,
downing
the Bulldogs by a decisive 27-12 score, and the Jackets also managed a 6-6 deadlock with Sanford.

Led by halfbacks Jimmy Marshall and Jack Peachey, the Jackets have shown at times a powerful
running
attack, but have had trouble in passing and in setting up a consistent, determined defense.

Last year both schools were experiencing a bad year when the Jackets broke a two-year football
famine
by defeating Eustis by 13-0 score.

Leesburg's performance in this year's tilt depends largely on the showing of Jimmy Marshall, who has
scored most of the team's TD's, and is the leading ground gainer. Marshall was nursing a lame leg at
the
first of the week, but is expected to see action tonight.

Eight o'clock tonight Thursday will see two determined teams facing each other, and should produce
one
of the finest games of the year.
