Leesburg vs DeLand, High School Football Game

Jacket Jayvees Win Over DeLand In Final Period

By Ronald Bell
The Leesburg Commercial-Ledger
Wednesday, November 10, 1954

Although stalled on offense for most of the night the Yellow Jacket JV squad scored with quick bursts in
the first and fourth quarters to break up a 6-6 ball game in the last 35 seconds, and go on to win 12-6
over DeLand.

The game was played on even grounds until late in the second quarter when the Jackets recovered a
Deland fumble on the DeLand 14 yard line from where Don Cunningham scored on one of the best
runs of the night. The second half went the same way with DeLand scoring on a recovered fumble that
a DeLand guard picked up and went 25 yards for their only score.

The ball game looked as though it would end in a 6-6 dead lock with both sides holding their
opponents to little if any gains on offense. During this defensive battle Jiggs Pelt was the mainstay in
the Jacket line as was Jack Hewitt and Tommy Milam.

With less than a minute to go the Jackets took over on the Bulldogs 32. On the first play the Jackets
drew a 15 yard penalty which threw a dark gray cloud over the chances of breaking up the tie ball game.
With 1st and 25 Tommy Milam picked up 11 yards behind the fired up Yellow Jacket blocking on
second down. Herbert Burton carried 7 more to make it 3rd and 8 with the ball here. Quarterback
Ronald Bell carried for the necessary first and with 35 seconds to go Eddie Parker scored to give the
Jackets their TD and seventh straight victory.

Other boys who deserve mention for their outstanding work are Jimmy Johnson tackle, Andy Miller end
and Harold Meyers guard.

The last game of the season for the JV's will be next Tuesday, if they win they will have a season record
of 8 wins to no losses.
