Yellow Jackets Began Moving After Losing First Three
Games

Team Captured 5 Of Last Six Games On Tough Schedule

By Ronald Bell
The Leesburg Commercial-Ledger
Thursday December 7, 1954

After losing the first three games the Leesburg High School football team has gone on to win five out of
the last six games defeating Winter Garden, St. Leo, Winter Park, DeLand and Eustis while losing only
to Cocoa in a 7-6 thriller.

Head Coach Earl Burt started off the season with a group of inexperienced and light boys who had th
desire to play football. By the end of the third game the boys had found their place and were ready to
take their place among the leaders.

The first three games were of losses to Apopka, Sanford, & Melbourne. The Jackets broke into the win
column with a 13-12 victory over Winter Garden. The following week the Jackets lost a heartbreaker to
Cocoa the main O.B.C. powerhouse at the time, 7-6. A 32-13 victory over St. Leo started the Jackets on
their current four-game winning streak. The following week the Jackets copped a 15-13 homecoming
victory over 7th rated Winter Park. Two more victories rounded out the season for the Jackets-one over
DeLand 29-12 and one over Eustis 21-20.

Head Coach Burt is expecting strong opposition from St. Cloud but believes that Leesburg's tougher
schedule will be the difference.

The Jackets also have good reserves in their Junior Varsity who have amassed an 8-0 record behind
the able guidance of Coach Bill Thomas. Behind Howard Hewitt, Jacket center, is his brother Jack
Hewitt, J.V. center. At guards are Jiggs Pelt and Jim Tichenor, Tackles Jimmy Johnson and Byron
Herlong. At the flack spots are Andy Miller and Larry King. In the backfield are Ivan Roberts and Ronald
Bell.
