Injuries Hit Leesburg Grid Team

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Wednesday, November 28, 1956

The high flying Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High with an eye on Friday night's Elks Bowl encounter with
the Hurricanes of Lake Weir have been beset by injuries that is sure to affect the scoring punch of the
squad.

The biggest loss has been Halfback Chuck Showley who went in to the hospital over the weekend for
an
appendectomy. The go go boy will be sorely missed in the lineup as he enjoyed one of his best nights
as
a ballhawk in the Eustis debacle when he scored a touchdown on a sixteen yard jaunt and ended up
with
the second best yardage in the Yellow Jackets backfield.

At this writing Head Coach Earl Burt plans to alternate little Bobby Blount and another speed merchant
Lonnie White at the spot vacated by Showley. Blount at 120 lbs. has probably got more get up and go
than most others on the squad while White is jet on the squad action itself and gets to the line of
scrimmage faster than anyone else in the backfield.

On the line big Jerry Garlock Tackle Wayne Hall came up with leg bruises in the Eustis game and
missed
the first practice Monday. The loss of either of these two who have been such standouts in that Jacket
forward wall is sure to spell disaster for the squad that is sadly lacking in depth particularly at the end
post
with Reggie Fechtel out since the first game.

With the thought in mind of keeping his squad intact for this final encounter of the season Coach Burt
scheduled only dummy scrimmage for Monday with limited scrimmage on tap for yesterday. The cold
weather did not appear to dampen the boys spirit and they were out there mixing it up as if the season
had just commenced rather than drawn to a close like it is.

It is expected that the boys will mix it up real well this afternoon and taper off tomorrow as they
sharpen up
both their offense and defense for the invading Hurricanes of Lake Weir.

Outside of Showley and Fechtel who will not be seeing action and Hall and Garlock who will see their
share of duty the rest of the squad is in tip top shape and ready to roll. Their superior physical
condition
showed to advantage against Eustis when the Panthers tired in the second half and our boys still had
enough to go all the way. Spiritually the squad is looking forward to this second Elks Bowl bid for
Leesburg and is anxious to make a game of it against Lake Weir.
