Jackets Are Favorites In Lakeview Game Tonight
Parker, Showley Return To Lineup
The Daily Commercial
Friday, October 12, 1956
The Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High will assume the role of slight favorites when they take on
High of Winter Garden in that city tonight. Kick off time is set for 8 o’clock.
The return of Eddie Parker to the fullback spot along with Shoo Shoo Showley in the left halfback spot
responsible for this feeling among coaches, squad, and the followers of Yellow Jacket fortunes this
This will bring the squad up to the best shape it has been in since the first game of the season with
puts them two in every position. In addition to Parker and Showley, Robert McCleod and Ivan Roberts
completes the backfield for the starting offensive team.
Spelling Parker at fullback will be Mike Higgins who has filled in well for the ailing Eddie since the
game. There will also Bobby Blount to alternate at the left half with Showley while Lonnie White is sure
lot of action at right half.
At left end Jerry Garlock and Johnny Roberts will share the duties with Wayne Hall and Jimmy
tackle. Ferrell Young, Gene Weaver, and Allen Brown will be in and out of the game as roving guards.
Russell Avera will hold down his familiar center post. On the right side Jimmy Johnson and Tyrone
will alternate at tackle with Dan Larsen and George Parker filling in at end.
The boys have been working long and hard this week and are in top physical shape.
They’re up for this game and are anxious to even their season’s record and advance in Orange Belt
competition before the big games ahead. Last year’s game, if you will remember, ended in a one
touchdown victory for Lakeview but the Jackets have been triumphant in two of the last three years.
Graduation cut into Lakeview considerably and the squad lost its entire first team with the exception of
Tackles Bill Kuykendall and Bill Norris and Jack Sprawled.
In kuykendall they have an All-Conference choice last year and in the running for All-Conference
this year. He is big fast and powerful and is shifted from tackle to end to fullback whenever the
arises. Stopping this boy will just about stop any Lakeview drive.
The Red Devils of Lakeview finished fifth in conference competition last year with little chance of
improving their standing during the current season, operating from a Split T formation the Red and
of Lakeview concentrates primarily on its opening game with Ervin McDaniels a 150 pound scatback
lugging the leather a good deal of the time.
Their passing attack is built and Jimmy Crawford, their quarterback and Jack Spradley, a churning
lettermen throwing to the fingered end Jimmy Breadwell.
Thus far this year the Red Devils went down to defeat 26 to 0 at the hands of Seabreeze of Daytona
Beach and bounced back and whip Eustis 12 to 0. It doesn’t look like they’ll be able to improve on their
record in tonight’s battle but battle it will be from the opening kickoff until the final gun.
