Jackets Juggle Team To Find Winning Combination

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Wednesday, October 3, 1956

Plagued with injuries and harassed with a squad that lacks overall experience, Head Coach Earl Burt,
Line Coach Carlton Adams, Backfield Coach Frank Singletary, and End Coach Fred McDaniel worked
with various combinations in scrimmage yesterday in an attempt to come up with the winning one.

Johnny Roberts, a senior center at 5 feet 11 inches and 155 pounds was shifted to offensive end on
the
left side moving over to the right side with Gene Weaver for defensive purposes, Jerry Garlock was
moved back into left end with the defensive unit.

The loss of Reggie Fechtel is being felt more and more as the season progresses. In another move to
add scoring punch to the squad the coaching staff moved Dan Larsen into the left end slot as well.

Along the line Wayne Hall was moved to offensive tackle where his key blocks are sure to open up the
necessary holes on the "quickie" plays the Jackets employ. The offensive unit also had Gene Weaver
in
the guard slot on the right side.

The Jackets worked long and hard on pass patterns yesterday with Quarterback Ivan Roberts
connecting
several times with his ends and backs for long gains against the opposition. Roberts continues to
improve
in this department and perchance the Jackets may rely on their air arm now that the offense has been
slowed down with the loss of Eddie Parker.

Neither Eddie Parker or Chuck Showley, the "speedy spook," in the Jacket backfield have suited up for
practice at this early date and their prospects of starting Friday's game continues to be in doubt. The
loss
of such a combination is sure to be felt and to affect the final outcome of this second Orange Belt
Conference contest.

The prospects of Showley cutting loose on those wide sweeps along with Eddie Parker keeping the
defense in tight to prevent those power plays right up the middle is enough to keep any defense on its
toes. It's early in the week, though, and Coach Burt meanwhile is shaping his offense minus these two
stars, hoping all the while that both of these two will be able to see some action.
