Opener Next Week

Jackets Look Good In Hour Grid Scrimmage

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Saturday, September 16, 1956

With the opener against Ocala only one week away, Head Coach Earl Burt had the
Yellow Jacket squad scrimmage for a full hour at the high school football field
Friday night. This gave local fans a good chance to catch the 1956 edition of the
Leesburg High School football team in action and many of them turned out for the
event.

On the field it was big Eddie Parker the pile driving fullback for the Yellow Jackets
who ripped off large chunks of yardage and scored repeatedly for the locals. Ivan
Roberts at quarterback worked the keep play beautifully and had the opposition
confused on many an occasion.

Little Chuck Showley, the 150-pound scatback, continues to be the speed merchant in the backfield
and
is sure to be a threat whenever he is called on to deliver. At the other halfback post Coach Burt has
moved Robert McCleod from his guard spot into the backfield. This is a move calculated to add
strength
to a backfield that has suffered some from graduation.

Lonnie White, another halfback, is sure to see plenty of action as well before the season is over and
may
develop into a top notch back for the Yellow Jackets.

The real crowd pleaser, though, was little Bobby Blount who saw plenty of action in scrimmage as
quarterback for the opposition. AT 120 pounds this littlest of the backs had a heart as big as the rest of
them as he constantly passed well just before he was smothered by the Jackets big ends Fechtel and
Garlock. In the running department and determination and you can rest assured that you will be
seeing
much of him.The coaching staff has been real pleased with the downfield blocking of the Jacket
squad.
This is an improvement over last year and is sure to add yardage or shake one of our backs loose
once
the opponents secondary is taken out of the picture with an effective block.
THE LEESBURG DAD'S CLUB opened their year's work with a banquet honoring athletes,
coaches and school officials, and provided a very entertaining evening for their guest. This
group was caught at the speaker's table, and apparently have been listening to some of the
laugh provoking talk of "Coach Bob Fumble. Seated at the table are, left to right; foster
Broadway, LHS teacher and business manager of the athletic group: Junior Holloway,
vice-president; and Jack Hewitt, active member. Standing are, left to right, Lees Herlong,
who is a personal friend of the guest speaker. Warren Foster of Atlanta, and who
introduced him as"Coach Fumble"; H.W. (Cal) Callaway, president; and Ray Hayes, LHS
principal. (Photo by Universal Studio.)
