Jackets Meet Apopka In Home Opener Tonight At 8
Big Crowd Is Expected At Memorila Field
The Daily Commercial
Friday, September 28, 1956
The Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High and the Blue Darters of Apopka, will square off in the first Orange
Belt Conference game for both teams at the high school asthletic field tonight. Kickoff time is
for 8 and a sizable crowd of local fans is expeted.
The Blue and White Squad of Apopka High under Heacd Coach George Sengel and Backfield Coach
Lewis comes into town with a sophomore and juior lineup. The Blue Darters feature a pair of fine
ends in Carl Cousins and Don Blackwelder. With both an orthodox as well as a southpaw passer it is
expected that the air will be filled with footballs as the Blue Darter attempt to pierce the Jacikets pass
defense that proved so porous last Friday against Ocala.
Head Coach Earl Burt has had his Yellow Jacket squad brushing up in their pass defense all week
perchance the tide will be turned ala Joe Brodsky style come game time tonight.
It was Couisins, you know, who caught that touchdown pass against Umatilla last week as the Blue
took it on the chin 21 to 7. The young junior came up with a knee bruise, however which may slow him
down some. Dalton Clerghorn, their 180 lb fullback, suffered a bone chip in his ankle in pre season
scrimmage but continues to run iwth the best of them.
Their break away man in their backfield is Halfback Lrry Foss, who will be used principally on kkickoffs
and punt returns. He is one sure to turn on the steam once he get's daylight in front of him.
The Yellow Jackets will be playing without the services of their end Reggie Fechtel who will be out for
rest of the season and without their big ground gaining fullback Edie Parker. This is sure to make a
difference as was probven in the second half of last week's Ocala game when both boys were out.
Gene Weaver, a promising freshman, has been moved into Fechtel's spot at end and Mike Higgins,
showed brie flashes of brilliance last week, has been moved to fullback. Little Bobby Blount, the
on the squad at 120 lbs., is sure to see a good deal of action and may even run for the fullback slot
tonight. Another back sure to be called on for duty, is Lonnie White who throws them from the left side
and has the makings to go all the way.
All in all, tonight's game shapres up as a thriller diller to open the local season with. The Jackets
be able to come out on top for this one with the margin of victory not over two touchdowns. You can bet
that scrappy band of Blue Darters will battle you every inch of the way, however.
