Jackets Open 1956 Season Against Ocala Tonight
The Daily Commercial
Friday, May 21, 1956
Leesburg High School takes on a real toughie for their opening game as the Yellow Jackets meet the
Wildcats of Ocala High in Ocala tonight with kickoff time at eight.
Ocala under Head Coach Mike Bucha, sports a won four, lost four and tied two record from last year
this is in now way indicative of the ability of this squad. Their lst two games of the year featured a 21-20
win over Boone of Orlando and a tie game with Leon High. Under Coach Bucha the team operates in
familiar T formation switching at times into a single wing attack for power plays.
While their backfield is light the boys who will be carrying ball are the get up and go type who will be off
and running from the opening kickoff. Wayne Nalls a left half has been outstanding and was a sight to
in last weeks intersquad game. Dan Barksdale, their left end, played a whale of a ball game against
Boone last year and is sure to give the locals their share of troubles. In the middle of the line it is big
Priest, their 200 lb. guard who is a bulwark defense.
The Jackets backfield is heavier by far than their opponents, as a matter of fact, the whole Jacket team
will outweigh the Wildcats it's this advantage will be short lived by the speed and deceptiveness of the
boys from the "Friendly City".
With Ivan Roberts directing the Jackets from Quarterback the locals will be banking heavily on the
of their big fullback Eddie Parker. Chuck Showley, their new 150 lb. halfback, is a boy who heads for
open daylight once he's called on for duty. With Roberts throwing to ends Fechtel and Garlock to keep
the opposition's defense spread this is sure to be one of the best games of the season.
The locals are stepping from their own Class into double A when they take on Ocala and for this
this writer is forced to go along with Ocala tonight. It'll be close though and privately and publicly we'll
rooting for the Yellow Jackets. The margin not be over two touchdowns if it is that many.
PROBABLE STARTING LINEUP for the Yellow Jacket eleven in their opening game in
Ocala finds Jerry Garlock at right end, Jimmy Johnson at right tackle, Allen Brown at
right guard, Russell Avera the center. Ferrell Young the left guard, Jimmy Tichenor at
left tackle and Reggie Fechtel the left end. In the backfield it's Ivan Roberts at
quarterback with Robert McLeod at right half, Eddie Parker the fullback, and Chuck
Showley the left half. (Photo by Bob Goss).
