Jackets Seek Second Conference Victory Tonight
Leesburg To Meet Melbourne At 8 O'clock
The Daily Commercial
Friday, October 5, 1956
Without the services of Backs Eddie Parker, Shoo Shoo Showley or end Reggie Fechtel, the Yellow
Jackets of Leesburg High will take the field at 8 tonight in an attempt to cop their second Orange Belt
Conference game in as many weeks.
Melbourne loser to Fort Pierce 20 to 0 in their first game, comes to Leesburg with two weeks rest.
Head Coach Rick Gillespie, in his 12th year with the school, the Bulldogs of Melbourne High running
their T formation offense led the pack home in Orange Belt competition last year.
However graduation was rough on the team. Their biggest loss as the twin Nida brothers, Ted who
Little All-State guard, and George, and All Conference tackle and full back. It was the after, and full
It was the after, you know, that scored two of the touchdowns last year in a fullback counter play up the
middle that sent the Yellow Jackets own to defeat 20 to 7.
Gone also is Toby Platt, an end, and Jack Platt, captain and guard. Passing from the line as well will to
Alan Whiting. All Conference center and Bobby Grover, All Conference tackle.
Coach Gillespie has had to build his team around All Conference quarterback Carl Meyer, All
quarterback Carl Meyer, All Conference End Bill Stroud, and Barry Corbin, a halfback who made a
second all conference team last year. You can put your money on the line, however, and bet that with a
bunch of Bulldogs that will be champing at the bit and ready to do battle with our Yellow Jackets. The
Green and White team of Melbourne High will feature a fast running attack built around Barney Corbin
and a passing combination sure to give trouble in Quarterback Carl Meyer and end Bill Stroud.
The Yellow Jackets will be going with just about the same team that took the field last week with the
exception of end where Johnny Roberts has been working out and is expected to get the go ahead
over Gene Weaver on the left side. Your backfield will be off and running with Quarterback Ivan Robers
showing the way to Halfbacks Robert McLeod and Bobby Blount, and Fullback Mike Higgins. Lonnie
is sure to see a lot of action as well with the defensive unit.
As it looks from this corner is a toss up either way so name our price and take your pick. Cometh final
tonight neither team may go home with anything more than a moral victory.
