Melbourne Wins 6-0 Tilt Here

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, October 7, 1956

The Bulldogs of Melbourne High clung tenaciously to a one touchdown lead and sent the Yellow
Jackets of Leesburg High down to defeat 6 to 0 on a water-logged Memorial Field Friday night.

Line play on both teams was outstanding as the Yellow Jackets were held to a mere forty yards rushing
for the entire game. The sparse crowd was treated to some of the best line play this year as the Yellow
Jackets were unable to penetrate within the 30 yard line of the visitors, and didn't garner a first down
until
the second half.

The quarterback keep play worked well for the Green and White of Melbourne throughout the evening
the one
tally as Carl Meyer, an All ning and was responsible for the Conference Quarterback last year, lugged
the
leather off his own left side for a 67 yard jaunt into paydirt. A bad pass from center prevented the extra
point.

In the fourth quarter the Yellow Jackets confused the Melbourne defense by switching into a single wing
formation. From just such a lineup they racked up two rapid first downs with pass plays and a 15 yard
run
by Quarterback Ivan Roberts. The Jackets reverted to their tight T again however and the attack bogged
down.

The wet playing conditions accounted for five fumbles in the first half with Leesburg losing their three
and
ZMelborune losing the two they bobbled.

Melbourne caught the Yellwo Jackets uinawares to start the second half with an on-side kick to regain
possession of the ball.

The contest was clean and hard fought with not one personal foul being called aginst either team.
