Parker Doubtful Starter For Home Football Opener

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Monday, September 24, 1956

Big Eddie Parker, Leesburg's backfield answer to the Rock 'n Roll craze, continues to remain a doubtful
starter for the home opener on Friday against the Apopka Blue Darters. As practice resumed for the
Yellow Jackets, Parker continued to sit on the sidelines and nurse a severe ankle sprain incurred in
lastFriday night's opener with the Ocala Wildcats.

The big fullback experienced some trouble with his ankles last season and went into the Ocala game
with
both of them taped as a precaution against injury. The attempt was in vain, however, as he sat out the
entire second half as a result of his injury. His presence was sorely missed in the Jacket backfield as
the
locals pushed to within the Ocala 20 on two separate occasions but failed to push across the all
important
six points.

Another loss, sure to be felt, in the Yellow Jacket lineup is Reggie Fechtel who will be out for the
remainder of the season, with a broken leg that may end his playing days. Both Reggie who played left
end, and Eddie who played right end on the defense, are juniors.

Meanwhile Head Coach Earl Burt and his assistants, Line Coach Adams, Backfield Coach Singletary,
and
End Coach McDaniel, are sweating and stewing as they try to come up with the winning combination for
the season's opener at home.

The season's opener will bring the Blue Darters of Apopka high into town for the first conference tilt for
both clubs. Game time will be eight o'clock.

A new addition to the squad is Gene Weaver, a five eleven, 160 lb. end. Gene is only a freshman but
has
shown tremendous promise and is sure to see a lot of action before the season is over with. With four
years of football ahead of him, this boy has a long way to go before he hangs up his cleats at Leesburg
High.
