Yellow Jackets Scuttle Pasco Pirates, 27 To 18
Leesburg Wins Second Straight Victory Over Favored Opponent
The Daily Commercial
November 11, 1956
The Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High, behind their pile driving Fullback Eddie Parker, rolled to a
smashing 27 to 18 victory over the Pasco High Pirates of Dade City at Memorial Field Friday
"Steady Eddie" was ready and there was no stopping the big one as he scored three of the
Yellow Jackets TD's, converted three extra points and was a constant thorn in the side of the
Pirate defense all night.
The scoring parade stared early in the first quarter as the alert Yellow Jacket defense recovered a
fumble at the visitor's 42 yard line. They garnered a first down on the 30 and it wasn't long before Parker
was rambling goalward on a sweep around right end. The pitchout play from Quarterback Roberts
24 yards into paydirt. Parker ran the extra point and the Yellow Jackets were in front to stay.
A short punt by Roberts gave the visiting Pirates the ball on their 33 and a few plays later Halfback
Bennett Moore electrified the crowd in a 62 yard sprint into paydirt. Another costly fumble by Dade City at
midfield set up the second score for Leesburg. They got a first down on the 35 from which point
Quarterback Roberts on the keeper play raced around his left side picked up a key block from Jimmy
Tichenor and was pulled down on the visitors' three yard line. From this point Halfback chuck Showley
carried for the six points. Parker ran the extra point and the halftime score was 14 to 6 in a favor of
The half ended as Dade City led the air with passes and moved from their own 38 to the Yellow Jackets
In the second half the Pasco High Pirates introduced a new fullback to the crowd in Gene Alford and on
the first play from scrimmage he set everyone back on their heels as he raced 60 yards to bring the
visitors within two points of Leesburg.
The Jackets took the kickoff on their own 45 yard line and Eddie was wheeling and dealing again on a
yard jaunt that gave the victors a first down on the visitors 30. A Roberts to Garlock pass moved the ball
to the 10 yard line from which point Parker took a pitchout from Roberts for another six points. A pass
from Roberts to Parker was good for the point.
The Jacket defense came in for a share of honors in the second is as they stopped one Pirate on the
yard line and another at the three yard line. From this point Roberts punted to the 35 and a brilliant
runback by Ed Starling gave the visitors a first down on the 10.
They were not to be denied this time however as Bennett Moore scored their third and final touchdown
with a two yard plunge.
Following the kickoff Fullback Parker took off once more this time on a 43 yard scintillating run that gave
the Jackets a first down on the Pirates 28. A fumble lost the ball for them but they came right on offense
when the Pirates were unable to move.
It was Parker again, this time from 30 yards out who applied the clincher and the Yellow Jackets came
the field victorious to the tune of 27 to 18.
Russell Avera at center played one of the best games of this his senior year as he constantly stopped
both the Pirate ground and air attack and on more than one occasion was the fifth man in their backfield
to throw a monkey wrench into their offensive plans and their backs for all important losses.
