Yellow Jackets Shut Out Winter Garden Team, 12-0
Leesburg Team Looks Good In Conference Win
The Daily Commercial
Friday, October 14, 1956
The Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High came with their second Orange Belt Conference win of the young
season as they dumped the Red Devils of Lakeview High in Winter Garden Friday night 12 to 0.
The Yellow Jackets moved from the first time they got their hands on the ball with three rapid fire first
downs in succession before losing the ball on a fumble at mid filed. The next time they got their hands
the ball they were not to be denied and the first play of the second quarter saw Quarterback Ivan
step back on the 25-yard line and heave a pass in the outstretched arms of waiting end Jerry Garlock
the six points.
A Leesburg fumble on their own 15 in the second quarter put the Yellow Jacket defenders to the test
the hard charging linemen came through in grand style. Lakeview was able to make their first down on
five yard line but Luddie Worley was hit by a bonejarring tackle as he crossed the double stripe and a
swarm of Yellow Jackets pounced on the loose pigskin for automatic touchdown giving Leesburg the
on the 20 yard line.
The second half developed into a game for the referees as they marked off yard after yard against both
teams and at one point threatened to gain more yardage than anyone else on the field.
Late in the second half Quarterback Roberts demonstrated his ability as a pass defender once more
intercepting a Lakeview pass at their 32 running it back to the 27. Two plays later it was the same
on a keeper play who went off his won right side and cut to the left sidelines for the 17 yard jaunt into
scoring territory. A host of blockers in front of him meanwhile veered to the right to throw the entire
Lakeview defense off stride.
The return of Eddie Parker to fullback spot and Shoo Shoo Showley to left half had a decided effect and
influence on Yellow Jacket play throughout. Both ran well and were able to get the big yardage when it
was needed. Lakeview keyed on Parker most of the me and may of the Yellow Jacket plays employed
big boy as a faker for this reason. At one time it was Parker himself who stepped back to throw a pass.
The Red and White of Lakeview never did get off the ground with their attack making only one first down
late in the second quarter and only three downs for the entire game. They took to the air when their
ground attack bogged down but a number of bullet like passes from Quarterback Jimmy Crawford
found their mark for some reason or other. The game ended as Halfback Showley intercepted a
pass deep in his own territory.
Crawford and McDaniels bore the brunt of the Rd Devil attack while on the line Tackles Bill Kuykendall
continued to shine as the All Conference choice he is, and Bill Norris closed up the gaps in the forward
was many a time.
Guards Allen Brown and Ferrell Young were outstanding on the line for the Yellow Jackets and showed
promise of developing well in the years ahead for the Orange and Black of Leesburg High.
