Leesburg Yellow Jackets Hope For First Win Friday

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Thursday, October 9, 1958

The Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High came out of the mud and rain of Memorial Field
last week with several injuries and miseries that are sure to hurt as the season
progresses.

Mike Sheets who was coming along nicely and was expected to be a lot of help to the
squad this year has
come up with a bad back that is sure to limit his availability. Dillard Copeland has been in
and out of the
lineup with a knee injury continues to be available for limited duty only.

Big Jerry Emerson one of the biggest tackles in the Jacket forward wall is having a battle
with the flu while
in the backfield both Quarterback Barry Stegall and Halfback Robert Lowery have been
victims of colds.

Glenn Tyre and Lynn Bates have moved into the starting eleven and have nailed down
guard positions in
the offensive unit. Their aggressiveness and all around heads up ball has earned them
starting
assignments.

Returnee Roy Laffick continues to improve in his blocking and tackling assignments and
could be one of
the best defensive tackles in the Jacket forward wall this year. Chip Bridges, transfer
from Wildwood, has
also shown up well in scrimmage this week and will be playing the middle guard in the
defensive unit
against Lakeview.

Coach Billy Brewer and his staff have installed a new offensive pattern for the Yellow
Jackets this week
making full use of flankers and the outside running ability of Halfbacks Ronnie Gibson
and Randy Brown.

The squad will taper off with dummy drills in order to sharpen their timing in this
afternoon's session.
Some twenty five boys will be suited up tomorrow for the trip to Winter Garden and the
game with
Conference for Lakeview High.
