Yellow Jackets Face Red Devils In Winter Garden
The Daily Commercial
Friday, October 9, 1959
The only thing certain about the Leesburg Yellow Jacket lineup tonight as they face the power-packed
Red Devils of Lakeview High in Winter Garden in that there will be eleven men suited and on the field
the kickoff at eight.
The backfield picture in particular is the darkest it has appeared on the local school scene in many a
year. Barry Stegall, who suffered an ankle sprain and sat out the last half of the Wildwood fracas last
weeK, has not worked out all week long and was joined in mid-week by the Jacket's other quarterback
Johnny Ward, who twisted his knee in scrimmage. This leaves the Jackets without a quarterback and
this writing the only fixture in the backfield is Roger Clark at fullback. David Webster is still one of the
walking wounded and will not be suited for tonight's game. This leaves Randy Brown, Bobby Lowery,
Dickie Huff, and Co-Cap. Lynn Bates and it is expected that Head Coach Whitey Smith will be liberal in
use of this quartet. It will be interesting if nothing else to see just how to use them and how the Jackets
respond to this wholesale shifting.
Newcomers to the Jackets forwards wall are expected to be Jimmy Brunson who will move into a
tackle berth with the offensive unit and Hunt Pauling who will get his chance at guard if the hand injury
that David Roberts has been nursing fails to respond to treatment.
The return of Joe HeatH to action is sure to bolster the situation at end where he will team with Jimmy
Walker and Barry Parker. Chip Bridges is expected to team with Brunson at tackle while Glenn Tyre
the nod at guard and Jimmy Copeland will be over the ball at center.
Moving in with the defensive unit will be Co-Capt. Ken Ferguson, Mike Sheets, and Bobby Lowery.
They will certainly have their work cut out for them as they attempt to stop this Red Devil juggernaut that
has rolled over Seabreeze, Kissimmee, and Titusville and meets Leesburg in their first Orange Belt
Conference test. The Red Devils are strong contenders for the OBC crown this year with a multiple
directed by quarterback Frank Browder and built around a 6'2" 200-pounder Maurice Hazen, who when
he is not at end catching the aerial heaves of Quarterback Browder, is lugging the leather as a
A big gun in the Red Devil onslaught this year has been Fullback Paul York with four TD's to his credit
already and who has been the take charge guy for this Paul Adams coached eleven. Rounding out the
picture for the Red & White squad are Hughlan Martin and Hollis Holden, a couple of halfbacks who
sophomore standouts last year.
All in all it looks like a full night for our Jackets as they attempt to bounce back after two straight defeats
the hands of Apopka and Wildwood following an opening game win over DeLand. One thing is certain,
1959 edition of the Leesburg Yellow Jackets is a team that doesn't know the meaning of the word quit
will fight you every inch of the way. One of these nights they're going to bounce off the turf and knock
some of these big boys off. I know I'll be there when it happens. Let's hope several thousand Yellow
Jacket faithfuls are as well.
