Locals Will Meet DeLand Football Warriors There

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Friday, September 18, 1959

The Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High will be at full strength for the season's opener against the
Bulldogs of DeLand in the Volusia County City tonight. Except for Halfbacks Dickie Huff and David
Webster who
have been slowed somewhat, by injuries the rest of the squad is expected to be in tip top shape for
tonight's contest.

Squad spirit continues to improve and the Jackets are out to avenge last year's 16 to 6 setback at the
hands of the Bulldogs. The locals showed up well in that affair however coming out on top in the
statistics
column and hanging onto a 6 to 2 lead for three quarters before weight and experience took the toll and
the visiting DeLand eleven pushed across two quick touchdowns and the two points after to take the
victory.

The loss of fifteen lettermen via the graduation route is sure to hurt the host club and might just tip the
scales and make for a real ding dong battle between the two. Whatever the outcome local and Central
Florida fans are in for a whole lot of football when these two Goliaths of the gridiron clash in DeLand
tonight.

For the Jackets Barry Parker, James Walker, and will share the end duties while Ken Ferguson and
Roy
Laffick will be given the nod as offensive tackles. Chip Bridges is expected to be moved in with the
defensive unit. David Robers and Glenn Tyre will hold down guard posts while Jimmy Copeland will be
over the ball at center.

Johnny Ward will be calling the signal at quarterback and will count a whole lot on his big fullback
Roger
Clark for offensive thrusts. Lynn Bates and Bobby Lowery continue to battle it out for a starting right
halfback post while Randy Brown will be a constant threat to go outside.

The defensive alignment in the Jacket backfield will include Dickie Huff and David Webster who will
see
limited action and Barry Stegall who should be able to go all the way.
