The fightin' Jackets of Leesburg High went down to a 7 to 0 defeat at the hands of the scrappin'
Wildcats of Wildwood High at Memorial Field Friday night as an overflow crowd witnessed one of the
best grid battles to be seen here in some time.

Favored by two or three touchdowns the Wildcats of Wildwood High pushed across a touchdown and
the extra point with but two minutes left on the clock to come out on top of a Jacket team that would
never say die. The Whigham coached crew from Sumter County had a 65 yard punt return for a TD
nullified by a penalty in the first quarter and were stopped on the Jackets three yard line when the buzzer
sounded ending the game. They lost another scoring opportunity at the start of the second quarter
when the hard charging Jacket forward wall jarred the ball loose from Fullback Harold Curington and
the alert
Dillard Copeland pounced on the loose pigskin at the Jackets one yard line.

Pass interceptions stopped Jacket drives first on the Wildcats twenty yard line in the second quarter
and then on the Wildwood five in the third quarter. Their last scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter
fizzled out on the visitors fifteen yard line when their attack bogged down and was stopped by a hard
charging Blue and White forward wall.

The first half saw the Sumter County wrecking crew in control of the ball for the most part starting with
the opening kickoff. It was six minutes after the game started that the Jackets got their hands on the ball
for the first time. The Wildcats racked up seven first downs and sixty one yards on the ground and
twenty six in the air to one first down, twenty yards on the ground and thirty eight in the air for the Jackets
in the first two quarters.

The Orange and Black of Leesburg High moved the ball well in the second half starting with the kickoff
from their own twenty and moving downfield with two consecutive first downs only to have the Wildcats
Larry Maier intercept a
Randy Brown aerial on the visitors twenty six yard line. Wildwood brought the ball
back downfield and the Jackets regained possession at their own thirty two. This time they moved with
three consecutive first downs to have another pass interception stop their drive at the Blue and White
five yard line.
